The first opportunity comes from Third Church in Pella. Below is a mass e-mail I recieved from them. The second opportunity comes from Samaritan’s Purse. Please let me know if you would like more information on you can help.
As I stated in the email I sent to you earlier today, several members of our church family have family and friends who have suffered great material loss in the tornado in Parkersburg last weekend. Jason Braithwaite has stepped forward to help coordinate donations of items needed and will be working with Hope Reformed Church of Parkersburg. Hope Reformed Church is a congregation with approximately 95 families and somewhere between 30 and 40 of those families have lost their homes. Jason has been in contact with Pastor Neal Ooms and they would be grateful for anything that we can send.
Their most urgent needs:
Diapers – all sizes
Non perishable foods
Baby food, wipes and other baby supplies
They also need:
Toiletries, tooth brushes/paste
Feminine hygiene products
Shoes – particularly tennis and work shoes (new or used)
Under wear (new), t-shirts
The contact number for Jason Braithwaite is xxx-xxx-xxxx. The facilities team from Third Church has placed three collection containers around the building for the purpose of gathering donations. The containers are located as follows: one container will be near the auditorium information desk, another will be placed in the main church kitchen and the third will be located downstairs by the restrooms near the Cafe’ entrance.
The one thing all of us can do in the days to come, is to pray. Pray for safety as the residents of Parkersburg continue to clean up and search for belongings. Pray for the weather to allow time for them to cleanup without the extra complications of rain or storms. Pray for patience on the part of people as they try to find their way to a new sense of “normal” and for a sense of cooperation is such a stressful situation. Pray that people’s daily needs are met and especially be in prayer for the families who are grieving the loss of loved ones amidst all of the chaos and destruction.
We will continue to communicate the needs and way our church family can help through the church emails and the bulletin.
Thanks for your generosity,
Good morning everyone.
After much prayer and consideration, Samaritan’s Purse is responding to Parkersburg, IA. Our equipment/trucks left this morning from our Disaster Relief Warehouse in North Carolina. We have not secured housing just yet in Parkersburg, but we have a couple of leads and are praying the right doors are opened to us.
We do not know just yet if the work will be mostly tree work, debris removal or tarping/roofing…..or a combination of all. However, we will have the right equipment on hand regardless of the need.
I do apologize for not having more detail for you at this point, but please trust that we will be ready to properly serve the residents of Parkersburg once we have boots on the ground. Our ultimate goal is to show the love of Christ to those we serve. Let’s get a team of volunteers together and do that very thing.
Some of you have indicated in an earlier email that you would be available to serve with us in Parkersburg. Therefore, if you are still willing and able to go………please go ahead and submit the Volunteer Questionnaire. This will save you a step later because it will allow us to schedule you as soon as we secure our housing location. This questionnaire will be used for both a team of 1 or a larger team. Regardless of the size of the team, this is the Questionnaire that needs to be completed.
