A Joyful Journey

Sunday Recap May 18, 2009

Filed under: thebridge — martyschmidt @ 10:04 am

Here are some quick bullets of reflection on yesterday morning.

  • The set up crew was all over it yesterday. They actually might be a little board next week as we transition to the summer schedule in Bridgekids going from 3 rooms to 1.
  • Loved the move of the refreshments table.
  • The worship team showed up wide awake and ready to rock.
  • We had a crew of people who shouted everytime we mentioned the word connector card. That had us laughing pretty hard.
  • I got a few comments on my shirt which said “Shucks” and had a picture of a corn cob on it. However, when I clipped my mic on my shirt it covered up the “h” which had people wondering why I would where such a shirt.
  • I loved sharing the historical and contextual background of the Good Samaritan. It was fun watching people have light bulbs go on.
  • Great response time. People came forward in droves to offer up a neighbor.
  • Growth Group sign ups got kicked off. Go to to sign up for one if you haven’t had the chance.
  • We started to video our services a few weeks back. I saw part of the first one that has been edited. I think we will have it figured out by the fall. I love it when people just grab a hold of things and make it happen.

Toby’s Amazing Week May 14, 2009

This week has been amazing for Toby. It started on Monday night when we had two piles of dirt dropped off in our yard. He didn’t go to sleep until 11:30 because he knew Paul was coming in the morning.

Toby and Dirt

6:30am on Tuesday he woke up wondering where Paul was. Paul showed up a little later and Toby was glued in on the bob cat moving all the dirt. Later he got to sit in it which was pretty awesome!

Later in the morning we got a phone call from a friend who said they had some big construction trucks at their place and they invited Toby over to take a peek. He got to do a whole lot more then watch. The picture below is him in the bulldozer!

Here is some video footage of Toby actually moving the levers and driving the bulldozer. I was (and still am) jealous.

Wednesday was mostly an inside day but we did have a special treat of some popcorn. Here is a video of Jenny and I predicting the very thing that would happen.

Shortly after Toby came in Lydia showed up yelling “POPCORN”!

Popcorn Time

Today Toby spent some of the day outside working on the garden. Then after nap it was time for his big surprise. Here is a picture showing his excitement.

Big Smiles Toby

And here is the video footage of the reveal.

WOW – What a week. While I am downstairs typing this I can over hear Toby talking to his drums, “I’ll be right back guys, I’m going to go get a snack.”

We are having our Membership Class tonight from 7:00-8:30pm at OCOM.

I am really excited about our new and improved Membership process. I believe God has called us to radically change our former process so that we might better serve His Kingdom. If you are unable to make tonight’s class make sure and let us know that you would like to still become a member. We are currently planning a second date.

The Other Half On Mothers Day May 9, 2009

Filed under: Random — martyschmidt @ 5:52 pm

Even thought it is tomorrow the Mothers Day Celebrations and shout outs have started. This unique holiday in which we give pause to remember and thank our mothers is loved by Hallmark, cell phone companies, and florists. Husbands scramble to think up a gift that says I love you and settle for an appliance. Like me for example, I’m giving Jenny a toaster. To me it says you warm my heart. Children grab some crayons and start drawing up coupons like, good for one hug. When I was a kid I would always pick those things my mom would rather I not do like, good for one breakfast in bed cooked up by me. The entire weekend is filled with people doing whatever it takes to love on mom and all of humanity says, awe – now that is beautiful.

What about the other half? What about those who have lost their mom and this time of year reminds them of their loss? What about the husband who no longer has their spouse with them and grief sets in? Or what about those who wish they could be a mother but first they need to not be single or the one who is married but is unable to have children? Or what about the mom who this past year had a miscarriage? What about the child/son/daughter/adult who never knew their mom? What about the countless people who were neglected because of their moms habits and behaviors? What about the individual who has talked to their mom for months or years?

The older I get the more I realize that every holiday has two sides to it. One is full of bliss, memories, family, laughter, and joy and the other side is full of pain, remorse, bitterness, grief, and sadness.

So for those who are on the other half of this Mother’s Day may you hear these words. You matter! You are not alone. You are known by your maker and You are loved.
